After the Removal of Multiple Teeth
Pain Management and Swelling Control
- Pain Relief:
- For mild discomfort, take aspirin, Tylenol, or similar medications (two tablets every 3-4 hours).
- For more severe pain, take the prescribed medication. Contact the office if pain persists or worsens after two days.
- Antibiotics:
- If prescribed, complete the full course regardless of symptoms.
- Swelling Control:
- Use ice packs on the operated side of the face for the first 36 hours.
- Apply ice continuously while awake.
Diet and Oral Care
- Hydration:
- Drink at least six glasses of liquid on the first day to replace blood loss.
- Diet:
- Stick to liquids and soft foods that are comfortable to eat.
- Gradually reintroduce other foods as healing progresses.
- Oral Rinsing:
- Do not rinse your mouth on the first postoperative day or while there is bleeding.
- After the first day, rinse with warm salt water every four hours and after meals.
- If you have a denture, remove it after seeing your dentist and rinse 3-4 times daily.
Post-Surgical Symptoms and Care Tips
- Normal Conditions:
- Swelling (peaking in two days) and discoloration around the eye. Apply a warm, moist towel 36 hours after surgery to reduce discoloration.
- Sore throat due to swelling in throat muscles; this should subside in 2-3 days.
- Dry or cracked mouth corners if the mouth is stretched; use Vaseline to keep lips moist.
- A slight temperature elevation for 24-48 hours is normal. Contact the office if fever persists.
- Denture Adjustments:
- If immediate dentures are inserted, sore spots may occur. Visit your dentist within 24-48 hours for adjustments to avoid prolonged healing.
